In health matters, Thailand is generally less expensive than Europe. However if you do not want to do without a private clinic, a heart attack can lead to a 1 million Baht hospital invoice.

Travel health insurance policies are usually only valid for a limited amount of time, usually for the length of a holiday. Legal health insurance policies do not generally offer protection outside of Europe.

Foreigners can also arrange a Thai health insurance. You should consider whether the upper payment tariffs are sufficient to cover treatment of serious illnesses in a private hospital. There is always the danger that the insurance company cancels the policy from their side or refuses to renew the policy for clients who are older or are suffering from a cost intensive illness. In many Thai insurance contracts, it is especially pointed out that the renewal of the contract is guaranteed up to 70 years old. There is of course, the danger that the contract will not be extended once you reach this age. However, there are now Thai insurance companies e.g. NSI, which offer an extensive insurance protection with a lifelong protection warranty which do, however, incur more expensive rates.

The contracts are usually staggered according to scope of services. The insurance premium can be considerably lowered by restricting the service level, for example by restriction of the insurance cover to include only outpatient hospital visits, since the costs of outpatient treatment is relatively inexpensive in Thailand. However this method of economizing might prove to become a pitfall if a kidney problem leads to the need for permanent kidney dialysis. A return to your homeland for a holiday is usually covered in an international insurance policy. However, a stay in Canada and in the USA usually requires an supplementary premium, because of the high costs treatment costs there. The companies vary greatly from each other in the upper insurance levels. A policy which has a low level of cover might mean that you sit on the costs of treatment for serious illnesses. If necessary, this could be balanced out by using the national hospitals which are considerably less expensive. In Thai health insurance corporations, as well in many Anglo-Saxon insurance companies, it is often the case that the insurance premiums are heavily increased in the year after expensive treatment for an illness.

If you are admitted to hospital, the insurance card alone is not usually recognized complete cover of costs. The hospital must first of all ensure recovery of the costs. Rather than cash, a credit card can be quite helpful in this case. Confirmation from the insurance office that the insurance contract is actually valid, is often also accepted. Hospitals are obliged to apply life-saving measures without previous clarification of the question of cost.

The advantage of holding a Thai insurance policy is surely that the hospitals can account for all resulting costs very simply and directly with the insurer.

If you are insured by a European insurance company, the hospital will usually require an acceptance of the costs for in-patient treatment, by FAX. Dependent on the individual case, this can take a few days. In this time, the hospital will require the payment from you to cover your treatment. After receipt of the acceptance of the costs, you will of course receive a refund of the amount paid. Out-patient costs will have to be submitted by you in writing before being refunded by European companies.

When choosing an insurance company, you should therefore consider other factors than just the cost of the premium. You must consider the cancellation period, level of service along with the costs covered and how quickly they can cover the costs.

Read the conditions of insurance policies very carefully!

* Can the insurance company cancel the policy and/or reject the extension of the contract?
* What type of reputation does the insurance company have?
* Is completion of the payment problem-free (ask a hospital for their opinion)?
* Are the upper limits of the service really sufficient?
* Is the premium increase still affordable with increasing age?
* Is the contract temporary and/or limited up to a certain age?
* Is a long, unrestricted visit abroad actually insured?

Unfortunately only general pieces of advice can be given here. Please inform yourselves and read the small print very carefully. You should also inquire about the experiences of people in your "Farang circle of acquaintances”. An insurance office, who deals with international health insurance policies, might have to be found in a larger city in Thailand.

Please consider that, even in Thailand, verbal promises are in no way binding. An example of this is a newspaper report in the Farang (14/2003)"BUPA does not set older people out in the cold". This should only be taken as a piece of information. Only a written promise gives you the security of being protected in the case of an emergency.

This method is best when you just want to send money once or a few times, not regularly.

First have them open a bank account if she doesn't have one already, and send you the bank and account details. You can then transfer money via your bank, doing a telegraphic transfer (also called a "wire transfer" or "inter-bank transfer" or "SWIFT transfer" depending on what country you are living in). This costs US$25 to $50, depending on the country you live in, and the bank you deal with, so it generally is not worthwhile unless you are sending more than $300. Some banks charge less than others, so it pays to shop around and ask what the fee is.

Debit Card

Cirrus ATM NetworkOpen an account in a bank in your town that has the PLUS or CIRRUS symbol displayed. This means they are on an international ATM ("automated teller machine", also called "banking machine") network. PLUS and CIRRUS are both international, and do the same thing, and charge the same rates to their customers (the banks). Some banks belong to both networks, some to only one, and some to neither.

Plus ATM NetworkThe account should be in your name. Get an ATM card (also called a "debit card" or "bank card") from the bank, put some money in the account, and use the card in any ATM to verify the card is OK by checking the balance or actually withdrawing some funds.

Your friend can then go to any ATM in Thailand that displays the same symbol (PLUS or CIRRUS), insert the card, enter the PIN, and withdraw any amount of cash (in Thai baht) up to the limit of what you put in the account. Your bank will automatically do a currency conversion from Thai baht to your currency. Since this is a separate account from your normal account, there is no danger that he or she (or anyone else if the card is stolen) can access your money in your normal bank accounts. Also, he or she can't withdraw any more money than what is in the account. So make sure there is no overdraft facility on the account when you open it.

Most banks will charge a fee for each withdrawal. Some banks charge as much as US$5, but most are less. Shop around and find a bank that has the lowest fees for international ATM transactions. (My bank charges nothing for international ATM transactions because I have a Gold Visa with them.) And tell your Thai friend to withdraw substantial amounts, not go back to the ATM every day to withdraw 100 baht, because the fees make that uneconomical.

So periodically you can transfer money into that account, and your friend can access it the same day. If you do this on a regular basis (say, at the first of every month, or the first and fifteenth), and tell your friend the arrangement, then she will know to go to the banking machine on those days and can withdraw the money.

With some banks, it is possible for the account to go negative (have an overdraft) even though overdrafts are not allowed, because he or she can withdraw the entire amount in the account, and the fee for international withdrawals will then be applied, pushing the account into a negative status. Some banks let you get away with this, and some charge a huge penalty (of say US$30). So check with your bank what their policy is. If you don't like their policy, you can do one of three things:

* change banks;
* keep an eye on the account (via the bank's Internet banking service) and transfer enough money in immediately to bring the account back up to zero; some banks will let you set up a rule that will be applied automatically to sweep money from your normal account into this account to keep the account non-negative;
* tell your Thai friend not to withdraw the entire balance, but to leave xxx Baht in the account at all times. This may or not be possible, depending on whether the ATM in Thailand tells them the balance of the account. This is a function of your bank, not the ATM or PLUS or CIRRUS. Some banks make the balance available, and some don't.

ATMcash

ATMcash is an American company that provides a reliable method of helping your Thai friend. They send an ATM card to your friend via Federal Express; this is a very reliable international parcel delivery firm that requires signed receipt and identification before handing over the package. Then you contact your friend and give them the PIN.

Thereafter, you can load the account in the USA with whatever amount you want in US dollars and your friend can withdraw the money in Thai baht at any ATM in Thailand.

With these tips, I would like to pass on my years of collected experience. In lots of areas it is unfortunately necessary to be vigilant and mistrusting about the working ways of the hand workers and to keep an eye on them. Their expertise can generally not be counted on, as hand workers in Thailand hardly have to take an exam or have their work tested in order to practice their job. Please consider the following tips to be suggestions.

Property
Is the position of the land in a place where no disturbances are expected to take place, even in the future? Are there really no plans for the building of any work shops, industrial plants, agricultural factories or major roads in the surrounding area? Is the area of land safe from flooding if it rains heavily?
A slightly higher position than a street or drain is an advantage.

Building a house
If at all possible, and unlike in Europe, you should try not to face a terrace or living room to the south. In a warm and sunny country such as Thailand, you should definitely protect yourself from direct sun rays. Even a few trees which provide enough shade can greatly increase the level of living comfort.

In the tropics, the standard building bricks generally lead to the extreme heating up of the walls during the day. The heat which is stored in the bricks is slowly released during the evening hours. This means that even in the evening, a comfortable temperature should not be expected. The required room temperature can be easily achieved with large air conditioning machines, however these are very uneconomical and unhealthy. It is better to insulate your building accordingly.

The simplest way to achieve these results is through choosing suitable building materials and by using extra insulation measures. The most effective way to insulate the walls is by using concrete blocks (Yutong, lever, etc.), which are now also available to buy in Thailand in building supplies stores. As an alternative, use of the standard double walls has the disadvantage that vermin get into the gaps and set up residence. The ceiling in the loft can be effectively insulated with a 10 cm thick layer of fibre glass.

The first choice when installing windows and exterior doors in Thailand should be plastics or aluminium. Plastic (PVC) windows frames are however still very expensive in Thailand. It is recommended that you at least install a PVC window frame in the bedroom, as these windows are installed with isolating glass and offer an excellent sound proofing as well as warmth isolation. This characteristic cannot be rated highly enough, especially in Thailand. You own night’s peace should be worth it alone. Wooden window frames have the disadvantage that they often expand and are very difficult to open and close.

Before plastering the walls, I would suggest that document the positions of all cables. The easiest way to do this is with photos. If an installation defect needs to be eliminated at a later date, such photos are a valuable help. In order to assist in estimating the size, you should take photos with a measuring tape for a comparison.

last night torrential rain was nothing uncommon but the winds that came shooting up the road in ban dung where i was taking refuge at Garry.s bar last night where just that little bit stronger then ive experienced
as the rain subsided after a couple of hours i made my way home at a snails pase and even in the dark the power of the strom was really evident photos from the village give you a idea of the winds power the highway was in places partly covered buy large branches that really do take some serious force to be ripped out of place

after talking to friends in udon thani it seems the storm did the full circuit even as i made my way home last night the sky was full of lightning from far left to far right if you have seen the film perfect storm you get the picture in hindsight i was probably unwise to attempt to make it home and can honestly say i was a little nervous
there was some serious home damage done in this issan village so i expect to see much more later today who said village life was boring well certainly not for the familey scared to death hiding in there home as part of it was ripped to pieces

not from last night but this is what we where up against the power of the wind

Udon Thani and Thailand holiday route

yes its holiday time again and for the first time in 4 years where going Manchester via dubai airport Terminal 3 well we made it to dubai as i edit my blog here in dubai you have got to wonder at this place

Dubai as invested tons of cash in this new extension to a already impressive airport there seems to be much more of these carts flying around i just witnessed a tourist nearly getting run over the poor chap jumped a mile in the air when the driver peeped is horn

onwards to Suvarnabhumi Airport bangkok again the last flights have been via Abu Dhabi and Doha two very uninteresting airports with limited space and services

so this trip where flying with emirates airlines 1 of the best over the last few years but without a doubt the best airline in my experience as been Etihad airlines for reasons of aircraft cleanliness and on demand video/ moveis a much better system then emirates had back a couple of years and there never slow to refill your glass if you need a top up
here is travel review for Etihad i found sounds like what i would write for sure

whatever airline you yourself prefer you can still find a host of complaints around the internet about many airlines but lets see what we make of emirates this trip a good point about emirates they did give me a free flight to Bangkok return a few years back because are plain was unrepairable to fly that day

for those of you that read my article about getting a new Thai biometric passport in London please be advised that my sons did take 5 weeks and the wife's came last week so 6 weeks in total so if you do need one plan well in advance don't waste your time with the outdated website ring them after 2 pm daily so you can speak to the passport department and get the latest requirements

we where just about ready to book are flights back to the land of smiles when the call came from the Thai consul in London sorry we can not extend

As I spoke the words a light came on I realised I had been stuffed again buy Thai bureaucracy
So there's a lesson to learnt again and again and again
Anyway stop moaning and do what as to be done I thought to myself so where in the north of England and have to get to London on Monday morning to be at the Thai consul for are 10 am appointment

first of all i decided to buy a advance rail ticket from Leeds west Yorkshire to kings cross London making a advance purchase is a must as we all know travelling on the day will cost you a arm our a leg the cost would have been about 120 pounds but looking to make further savings i found out from the ticket office about a 1 year family rail card which cost about 26 pounds this made the total cost with a large discount to around 100 pounds round trip for all 3 of us great news

as usual i picked a beautiful day to travel on ice cold winds and a ton of snow forcing us to walk from home to the main road car skidding around to meet are taxi at least on the train down to London we where kept a little warmer

we decided that a night in London would be better as are appointment was on a Monday morning so we again used advance internet booking to book the nearest travel lodge in London at north end road a shorty walk our taxi ride from Fulham Broadway
a very clean but basic room pre booked can be had as i did for 30 pounds a really great price

we slept very well the staff are on 24 hours and very helpful i asked for extra duvets they arrived in 5 minutes travel lodge really do give great value for money and a taxi to the Thai counsel rang from reception in the morning is only about 10 pounds better then paying around 200 to stay near buy

From the M25 J15 Bear left onto the slip road joining the M4. Continue on the M4 for approximately 9 miles. Continue on the Great West Road (A4) for 1mile. At the roundabout take the second exit and continue on the Great West Road (A4) for 1mile. Continue on the Great West Road for approximately 1 more mile and turn right onto the B317 North end Road. Continue on North end road for 0.6 miles and the Hotel is situated on the right had side.

so we made it to be the first on the scene no sign of life until 9.30 and within 30 minutes a Thai official was asking Thais and falangs to come back tomorrow as the place was jam packed

that just would have not been a option for us so get there early and leave lots of time for your onward travel plans the wife was served first after you pull a ticket as you walk in the whole process took 50 minutes for herself and are son are actual appointment time was 10 am if i had arrived at this time we would still be in London tonight no thanks

the service we got there was quick and efficient but it looks like they are getting inundated buy walk in.s trying to submit paperwork
well job done we only have to wait about 6 weeks for the new and old passports to come back to us via pre paid special delivery enveloped we supplied

of out in the boonies the pitfalls of investing large amounts of money in Thailand sometimes worry s me a little
the fact that the government keeps changing the goalposts as made me hold of for a little on looking at a second home but not put me of completely

what i have noticed in Thailand is when you buy on a new estate low to mid range you find that quiet a lot of your neighbours dont move in as you would expect with a lot of homes left empty buy families that work away most of the year this may sound ideal as that could mean more peace and quiet
but without proper maintenance the whole area slowly start.s to resemble a jungle very nice if you like the countryside but if you have paid out good money you could regret it

they say that to get a feel for where your going to live you should visit the area in the morning noon late afternoon and late on at night your looking for problems that could ruin your peace and quiet

the most annoying thing i have found is the good old soi dog second only to the drunken falang which you kind find both in large amounts on certain developments
of course being a moderate drinker i would not be classed as a drunk

anyway if your not sure about which areas may suite you then its probably better to ask a local estate agent F.B.I are the longest etabilised ones in udon thani and from my own brief meetings with them over the years they seem like a safe bet

and if you unlike me with lots of spare funds and already own some suitable land finding a decent builder whom you can do buissness with then alan the builder is doing a good trade prices are pretty fair and from the photos they post on the internet the jobs look spot on

well another year over and a new one begins if i look back on 2009 i could honestly say it was one of the worst years and one of the best the bad side about it was the distinct possibility that i would go from very little work income to none at all the first half of the year was the worst but things seem to have levelled out at least that is my perception

when these annalists speak of green shots a better a analogy would have been green shots in a desert yes many industries have seen demand increase but at the cost of thousands of business that have gone bust which may not have necessarily done apart from cash flow problems

as they say the banks will only give you a umbrella when the sun is shineing
with low interest rates that give poor returns on any saving.s you may have its not going to be easy to budget for the next couple of years for many expats

when the crap hits the fan the uk Europe and united states look like safe heavens with varying degrees of safety nets in place but would you wont to live on the poverty line in the UK our in udon thani issan Thailand
there's a big difference between making cutbacks in Thailand and the western world
if you work in Thailand and Asia then even a poor paying job will provide nearly everything you need day to day
whatever this next year brings things can only get better but i think i will keep a tight hold on the purse strings until i see the interest rates rise a little

By Bus:
There are buses from all directions to Nong Khai. Overnight "VIP" bus services leave from Bangkok in the evening and take about ten hours to get here. From Chiang Mai there is an overnight bus service which arrives in Udon Thani in the morning...from Udon Thani to Nong Khai takes approximately one hour.

There are regular bus services along the Maekong River on highway 211 from the west, via Loei, Chiang Khan, Pak Chom, and then (as shown on map below) Sang Khom, Sri Chiang Mai and Tha Bo. Also, there are regular services along the riverbank from the East via Bung Khan and then (as shown on map) Phon Phisai to Nong Khai.

As can be seen from the map Udon Thani is very close (54 km) and there are regular services every twenty or thirty minutes during the daytime. By Train:From Bangkok there are four trains a day; at 06.42, 19.25, 20.00 and 20.45. The best train is at 20.00 and takes 10 hours, the others take about 30 minutes to an hour longer.these trains can be caught in udon thani to nong khai with the journey being painfully slow but if your in right frame of mind it can be a very pleasant journey to nong khai and maybe on to Laos if the line gets finished
There are very good sleeping cars on these trains which cost about 480 Baht You even get clean starched sheets and a pillow!

where is the best burger in Udon Thani issan ?
these are just my opinions below and are totally unbiased in any way coming to udon thani 10 years ago the best place would have been tj.s bar and restaurant hands down i spent many mornings there tucking into a traditional fry up and was the first place i ever tried grits but back to there burgers
still to this day they are hard to beat on value for money and size ok then taste is another factor to some the only factor
there not the best tasteing i ever had but if i was hungry they fill a space

World's most expensive burger
but if price is no object try this burger for the more well heeled gentlemen
hopefully udon thani prices will never get this high i hope
right you dont like cheap and cheerful and you dont like to be ripped of but you still need a resonble priced burger cooked to perfection in a clean kitchen
then one of my top choices as got to be the irish clock
in downtown udon thani it ticks all the right boxes for me and apart from the food the surrounding.s are nice and comfortable
ok so we have the irish clock and tj.s what about the famous auzzie burger yes certainly worth a mention i can not speak for this year but in past years this burger was the best i had ate anywhere but the only problem you have is finding the original auzzie burger with so many clones of the auzzie pub in udon thani its hard to track down until recently i had never had the privilege of a burger at auzzie dons bar but auzzie don came up trumps for me last visit really enjoyed the meal
if you read this don keep your chin up mate we send are love to you all
ok back to burgers i could post the worst attempts but i wont so the last burger but not the least is made at the uptoyou bar at the entrance to nutty park udon thani

and if after this you still prefer to stay at home and cook your own then spend the money saved on your very on bbq at Custom Barbecues made in udon thani

its a serious question with more serious consciences if you get it wrong that's providing you make it to retirement in issan
aim writing this from a prospective of after turning 41 and in the recent year losing some friends and family at still quiet young ages

it seems my plans to retire in udon thani could come undone at the hands of fate the sensible answer to the above question is as soon as possible if you ask me but who aim i to give advise
certainly i don't wont to be old and run down what i finally call it a day
we spend are lives trying to amass a nice little nest egg to survive the ravages of old age is it worth the struggle our would it be better to let the welfare state take the burden like so many do in the west

i guess it comes down to self respect having travelled in many reactively poor countries and seen honest hard working people struggle day to day to survive i feel lucky to have the ability to knuckle down and work hard knowing that the fruits of my labour will pay of one day

over the next few years iam going to set myself a target and work towards it life as a expat is my reason to go down the investment and saving path as i fear the uk state pension will collapse over time
and being overseas in udon thani our elsewhere with no cash flow could turn a dream into a nightmare at the wrong age even at 41 i see my opportunities for work in the west slowly drying up in my sector it looks like some tough choices and a lifestyle change could be in the pipeline

my expat plan udon thani issan part 1

well i thought i would update my plan for full retirement on my blog so here goes
from my own personal experiences coming up with a retirement plan is not so difficult from whatever background you come from the hardest thing is making a start finally putting something into action
it.s very easy to put serious retirement planning of till next year especially if your budget is tight
anyway and i say this from the prospective of a typical man our woman who discovers Thailand and udon thani quiet a few years before retirement
we found are spot so to speak maybe even met a girl and married her as i did this was probably preceded buy many flights backwards and forwards for short holidays which even if within your budget can make a big dint in anybody's finances
what i tried to do at every turn is look at need and wont 2 things that come into play in a big way when your trying to make those pennies our cense build into pounds dollars our euro.s
coming from a relatively poor background i learned the value of money and from leaving the education system i have never worked week to week for money to live on
slowing building up my nest egg don't get me wrong i have wasted thousands
but even a small investment over a long period of time can pay big dividends ok yes the stockmarket.s dropped again and they will again and again but look at what you have today and take away your salary and replace it with state related retirement benefits could you survive on that no way
so what can we do about it well to save money is pointless if you have debts pay them of over 1 year 3 years our 10 but do it
yes a mortgage is a debt but with the chance of your capital investment growing
putting this aside for know and really look at what you spend this comes back to need and wont i could droll on but i would be interested to find out from my reders what combation of investments they have our would recommend
i will post my list of investments at a later date regards john

OK so i booked the morning flight that means i have to get up early first time this trip but after today i need a rest but still time for a couple of beers in nutty park i like the uptoyou bar and the black and white both good places cat the owner of up to you bar is always very pleasant i remember her working for Steve and mali years back next door to where mojos is now they seem to always do very well even before on the so called soi falang there bar seems to do most of the food for nutty park they do a very good cheese burger and fries not typical Thai food but we all need a falang food fix sometimes anyways its back to my room at top mansion for a early night the place is very clean and been a pretty new building everything still works

but the big downside is the noise this time round with the day and night centre not far away and 3 bars very close plus the constant clip clap of feet up and down a light sleeper might find this place not suitable but lucky for me i sleep like a log especially with a few beers in the tank so the 350 baht a room with air is good value even with the noise morning arrives nobody open for breakfast so i take a pre booked taxi car to udon thani airport 200 baht don't fancy a tuck tuck which i would normally take to the airport i think i am getting soft these days well udon thani airport keeps on getting better and is a pleasure to fly in and out of its a far cry from 10 years ago

i check in very quickly and grab a little food in the upstairs restaurant they mostly do Thai food with a buffet for about 150 baht running all day but i settle for fried egg and toast and a cup of tea about 120 baht pricey for Thailand but try getting that in a western airport for 3-4 dollars my air Asia flight to Bangkok is on time that's a good start

there is something i like about air Asia they defiantly have the best dressed air hostesses that's for sure and not bad looking either and if you book in advance you get a good price even with the massive add on.s for tax and the rest 1700 baht to Bangkok is not half bad

well after a hectic first week our thereabout in udon i decided on a day trip to nong khai after a good nights sleep caused buy a beer tiger overdose a certain fella caused Brian was to blame if you read this brain i hope Holyhead looks after you until your return anyways i got myself out of bed in good time so hear goes road trip to nong khai

easy to do the rayong nong khai bus passes buy central bus station just over dignornely from the complex 50 baht to nong khai third road bus station in luxury and a short journey compared to the old clapped out non air i think i am getting soft in my old age

but the air buses run pretty regular but its still worth checking the times a short wait could be offset buy a cold one in mojos our steves bar ok well i made it to nong khai if its you first time there i would head for the river to get orientated

basically you have the river and a row of restaurants then a road behind that that runs the full length of the boardwalk broken only buy the Indochina covered market then a couple more road and buildings separating them running adjacent to the river

nong khai is easy to find your way round most people stick around the first and second road where you will find Brendon's bar a few hundred meters past the covered market the bridge side Brendon's bar

was where i thought i was going to have a quiet couple of hours not so just as i had finished my breakfast some of the ban dung boys turned

up so i weakened and ordered my first tiger beer of the day 10.30 am this was supposed to be my day of the sauce but what the heck i wont get the chance when i am back to the grindstone in the uk so here goes

after one of the lads banged a few times on the roof to wake Brendon up is bar staff informed us he was not pissed upstairs but in India no wonder he did not come down so we proceeded to enjoy the view nong khai is a great place to chill out there's even if there's not much going on

well its was another good day out i made it back to udon thani for a chicken cordon bleu at the Irish clock i think i offered Steve to pay for it twice so i must have been slightly half cut buy this time i decided a few days in Bangkok where in order so i made my way down to the here travel agents 042 244305 next door to mister tongs new bar a very helpful Thai gay guy runs it and ba boom i am booked on the early morning 08.35 air Asia flight to Bangkok

well i just arrived in udon thani last week its been great catching up with some old friends 1 our 2 have gone home since my last visit and a few others have moved bars some removed from the old so called soi falang opposite the complex yes udon thani is changing rapidly the gradual increase in the expat community as more then been matched buy the increase in bars and restaurants most of which sit empty the older bars seem to be doing ok with custom built up over many years the new influx of bar owners have saturated the market newly open bars are closed up and quiet a few units sit empty

mostly unfinished but as a bar owner told me there is one getting of the plain every day with is wallet wide open and is eyes closed but there is one saving grace if you need to furnish a place of your own get down to pataya there having fire sells a local guy just picked up a new pool table from pats for 20.000 baht the day and night centre above as just 1 little gem right at the back a very tastefully furnished bar and restaurant called Hollywood adjacent to a lovely garden area there food is spot on i had the masaman curry a south Thai dish very tasty indeed

although i have based myself outside of town this trip i just spent a very nice 2night stay in the Irish clock a little bit of luxury in udon thani 850 baht a night with 100 baht of your breakfast which get plenty of good reviews Steve and mali have been in business a long while in udon

i also dropped buy another favourite of mine is harry's bar he does a good food trade and as plenty of parking just on the udon ring road up from the naplai hotel harry is one of udon thani oldest establishments and provides arguably the best burgers in town and a good chat harry speaks Thai Dutch German and English the bar as girls working there which can be helpful if your on your own

after a couple of heavy nights i chickened out and headed to the boonies to regroup our so i thought i can understand why lots of guys become alcoholic in Thailand not that i am one of course even in the badlands of ban dung issan you can find bars popping up some new ones some reborn from the ashes of a failed relationship its more like patent place then a six week rest

having just met Lars who is heading up the new expat club i was a little sceptical at first but he does have some great ideas OK most are not original but the idea.s are sound one.s
udon thani and issan as greatly changed in the last 9 years i myself have been familiar with the region the expat club idea is not a new one to this area i was a member of the expat club started in khoen khen many moons ago since long gone but with the massive influx of expats from all over the globe i see this club hopefully succeeding where they failed well here goes i will post the information given to me so you may judge yourself

well what a journey we had this time to Thailand my planned holiday in April was changed to the day after tomorrow owing to my farther in laws illness ok i shouldn't complain only i was lazy in getting myself sorted for this trip all the things you need like insurance bags packed bills paid then to top it of a couple of ruddy forms to fill in but finally where on the way i just downloaded Microsoft live writer for blogger which can be used on the move then uploaded later great little piece of kit but anyways here we are in Abu dabi airport

the halfway point the secudeled stop was 90 minutes but we have a small delay to 150 minutes the airport is a circular design on 2 levels with duty free shopping downstairs and seating upstairs the place is always full with very little seating available not the best place to relax in between flights but we just moved quickly to the small restaurant downstairs to eat a very overpriced chicken curry the wife and son are chomping on a apple each roll on Bangkok and some decent Thai food

the next 6 hours pass without any hassle etihad airlines aircraft are very modern aircraft with video on demand movies and a pretty good bar service emirates service seems to have slowed down over the last few years while prices have gone up but i like stopping halfway to Bangkok so either one will do for me

ok we made it to Bangkok and the long walk to emigration but the saving grace is if your with your Thai partner then go to the right side for Thais only queue up there together and within a few minutes you are throw no long queues and direct to collect your bags which again as improved as we arrived the bags where already on there way around happy days

as we get outside my wife's friend is waiting we cram 4 adults 1 child and 90 kilo of luggage into a Honda jazz and where of to udon thani issan i wake up a couple of hours later and spend the next 5 minutes having a shoulder massage as my neck is crock why did i let the wife talk me into this well to be honest i take care of getting here and she takes care of me when iam over here seems to work sometimes

there are lots of places to stop of on route and get a bight to eat and drink outside of korat you can stop at the made made lake as we pulled up there where at least 60 Thai police officers having a picnic as we pulled out and waved my heart melted until 30 minutes our so up the road they pulled us over for 200 baht but as our driver was well prepared with all documents we where waved on after the officer explained they needed to do this as they where broke

anyway here we are in udon thani province safe and sound after a extra long journey caused buy snow and ice on the Pennines i don't think we will get much of that in issan for the next six weeks

i just thought i would put together some places that seem to do decent food and accommodation in udon thani from guest house.s to hotel style rooms there is certainly lots of choice in and around udon for most budgets
the Irish clock gets a good crowd in and the food is tip top western orientated food is still quiet expensive compared to local Thai dishes but if your after that fix a couple of times a week then udon as plenty of variety
udon thani night market is where i like to eat a couple of times a week when in town
they play music videos on the large screen down there and if your lucky a game from the premier league but if your really lucky you can watch a 3 hour mowlam special
OK that's not my cup of tea either but it keeps the wife out of my air
another inexpensive place to eat is the complex around 25 baht to 50 baht will get you a decent dish its not enough to keep me going all day but i only seem to eat 1 large meal and pick the rest of the day

From Bangkok, take the Highway marked No. 1 to Saraburi and Highway No. 2 to Udon Thani via Nakhon Ratchasima and Khon Kaen Provinces, a total distance of 564 kilometers. you pass a beautiful lake to your left of the highway 30km south of korat a great place to stop for lunch the trip can be completed in 6 hours but give yourself more time at holidays and other busy times

By Bus

Buses for Udon thani and issan leave Bangkok’s Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) throughout the day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The journey takes around 10 to 11 hours and the fare is 145 baht for regular buses (260 baht for air-conditioned buses). Contact Transport Co. Ltd at Tel: 0-2936-2852-66 for more information.

Buses leave the main bus terminal in Khorat every half hour during the day and arrive in Udon thani five hours later. The cost is 81 baht for regular buses (146 baht for air-conditioned buses).

There are buses running between Udon Thani and other provinces such as Nong Khai, Loei, Khon Kaen, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom and Ubon Ratchathani. The buses leave Udon Thani Bus Terminal every 40 minutes.

The 8.30 p.m. Nong Khai Express (No. 69) from Bangkok arrives in Udon Thani at 6.33 a.m. on the next day. Rapid trains leave Bangkok on the Nong Khai line at 6.15 a.m. and 7 p.m. arriving in Udon Thani at 3.56 p.m. and 5.15 a.m. The first class fare is 569 baht, 2nd class is 457 baht and 3rd class is 95 baht plus applicable charges for sleeper and express services. ban mak-kaeng changed from a rural hub to the large modern city of udon thani our northern city Udon province is well known for the world heritage site at ban chiang which is the oldest bronze age settlement found to date situated 85 km outside udon which today as many large markets filled with agricultural produce

Udorn was the location for TACAN station Channel 31 and was referenced by that identifier in voice communications during air missions.

Udorn RTAFB was also the Asian Headquarters for Air America an American passenger and cargo airline covertly owned and operated by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It supplied and supported covert operations in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War

The U.S. turned the base over to the Thai military in 1976, but there were three significant after effects of the base's US presence. First, a number of the natives in the area were paid well and learned English, which helped them become more marketable to the outside world (a significant percentage of the more educated group now work in the Middle East oilfields). Second, the base created ties, including a US Consulate in Udon which was closed in 1995, and a VFW (veterans of foreign wars) Post. Finally, the base and the consulate caused the city to be viewed as a regional hub, and this impression has continued.

In recent years the province has received international attention due to the discovery of a large potash deposit in the area and some anticipate that the region will become a major exporter of the mineral. Beginning the mining process of gaining licensure has been substantially delayed due to public opposition to the mine. Many of the villagers who live directly above the proposed mine site have expressed concern that the company and its Environmental Impact Assessment have not adequately addressed concerns of salinization of groundwater and soil or land subsidence. Both would threaten the economic stability of local communities that rely primarily on income derived from rice farming

While the term is commonly used to refer to a Westerner who resides in a 'foreign' country, it comes from the Latin 'ex patria'. Translated it means 'outside the native land'. This has appeared in Latin texts for more than 2000 years and refers to Roman soldiers who left their homeland to fight battles for the expansion of the Roman Empire. Anyone who lives away from their home country can be described as a foreign resident, expatriate, ex-pat or expat. Thai people call them Indonesians call them bule. It's not necessarily derogatory, though.

To be successful and happy as an expatriate it is important to recognise and accept that there are differences in the way of life between 'home' and a 'foreign' country. Study and research beforehand will be beneficial, but only time and the experience of living, working (or retiring) in one or more different countries will ensure settling into new environments and feeling almost 'at home' again. It is possible, usually after a period of adjustment.

with the gradual decline of most major western currencies those expats on fixed incomes derived from pensions and investments drawn in sterling our us dollar are really starting to feel the pinch even in Thailand
and for those on the bottom of the ladder surviving on a UK state pension yes times are hard but spare a thought for those expats in Europe Sterling is pound for pound with the euro you can bet that a large number will be moving out of Spain maybe they will travel to Thailand even a small bungalow in Spain could buy you a decent house in Thailand and if you avoid the south and make your way up to issan in north east Thailand you would find even battered western currencies can still provide a far better standard of living then you could find in you home countries
the only thing to watch out for is healthcare make sure you do your research and factor into your budget the annual cost its certaniley worth makeing cut backs elsewhere to mantain cover for yourself and familey maybe one day all those years of payments you paid from your salary will entitle you to some kind of international fund outside of europe we can dream carnt we

udon thani complex is the real centre of town in most people’s minds in the hot month of April the place is packed with Thais and expats alike keeping cool you can rub shoulders with a few guys drinking coffee in one our 2 places ground level then if you take a trip up stairs you kind find some great food on offer at the food court
20 to 30 baht is my normal meal there very clean tasty just over the road was the old soi falang but alas times change and most of the bars moved around the corner near to the Irish clock

there are many reason why so called expats retire to thailand our even udon thani for that matter but it comes as no surprise that most come from failed relanships back in there home countries and when i say that be aware that there are a lot more lonley single old man trudgeing backwards and forwards from there local bar in there home countries without the comfort of a female companion
recentley there was a survey in the uk that found been single is becomeing the norm
so why not leave the rat race and the long faces back in the states our europe and speard your wings go out to Thailand and start to live a life
